The Peguis Annual Treaty Days is a weeklong celebration held during the second week of July, to honor Treaty #1 that our forefathers signed on August 3,1871. It is during this time that the Peguis band members collect the monies due to them, as written in the treaty.
.
It is also during this time that the community members set up concession stands at the Treaty grounds, and sell ethnic items, such as Indian tacos, soup & bannock, bannock burgers, and all other convenience foods-pizza pops, French Fries, potato chips, drinks, etc. Some vendors also sell turquoise & beaded jewelry, moccasins, star blankets, and other native crafts.
Major events during the treaty days are a source for enjoyment for everyone. These include the Annual Powwow, Square Dancing Tournaments, Mud Bogging Races, Marathon Races, a Talent Show, a Baby Show and a Monster Bingo, with the jackpot being as high as $ 10,000. There is also a weekend-long baseball tournament.
As you can imagine, there is a great abundance of fun to be had by everyday events and entertainment include daily talent contests, dances for the youth and adults, carnival rides & games, break-open ticket sales & V.L.T.'s, nightly Bingo's, pool tables, and video arcade games. One could also take pictures in "old time" costumes if they like- many Peguis people do this every year, and if they agree, their pictures are displayed.
Many people who come out for the first time often exclaim, "I wish I had come out sooner!" And, it is always exciting to meet new people, as well as old friends.
