The headquarters of the Canadian Armed Forces are located in Ottawa.
Since the Second World War, many Ukrainian Canadians served in the
Canadian Armed Forces and have worked in the Department of National Defence.

Brigadier General Joseph Romanow and Brigadier General Isidore Popowych

Brigadier General Joseph Romanow was born in Saskatoon, Saskatchewan
and served in the Royal Canadian Air Force during the Second World War
in Europe and Asia. He was also a member of the Ukrainian Canadian
Servicemen's Association in England. After the war, he returned to
Canada and completed his university education as an engineer.
He continued his career in the Royal Canadian Air Force and served in Canada and
Europe. He retired with the rank of Brigadier General.
Brigadier General Isidore Popowych was born of Ukrainian parents
in Berlin Germany during World War II. After living in France for
several years the family moved to Montreal.
As a teenager he was awarded the Governor General's Gold Medal
as top air cadet in Quebec. He obtained a B.Sc. at the University
of Montreal and was President of the Ukrainian Students Club 1964-1968.
He also obtained an MBA degree from the University of Western Ontario.
Throughout his career in the Canadian Armed Forces, Brigadier General
Popowych served in several operational and staff appointments
throughout Canada and Europe in NATO.
He was Chief of Staff (Support) for the Canadian Armed Forces
and was heavily engaged in the Gulf War conflict.
He was also responsible for humanitarian medical air flights
in the early 1990s to countries of the former Soviet Union including Ukraine.
In 1998 Brigadier General Popowych
and his wife Danya were hospodar and hospodyny at the Dauphin Ukrainian Festival.
