In 1980, the Royal College of Physicians and Surgeons of Canada and the Hannah Institute for the History of Medicine, together with the assistance of the Public Archives of Canada, were the hosts of an exhibition of photographs and materials on the history of medicine in Canada.

The materials on display covered the wide range and complexity of medical biography and clinical history with references to social, economic, political and military influences; the devastating effects of cholera on the lives of Canada's early settlers; early remedies and drugs; the life of country doctors at the turn of the century ; early transportation and communications facilities; the cost of health care; the role of religious groups in providing medial care; pioneer life in Canada; hospitals from 1639 to today.
