Christian Daniel Claus (1717 - 1787) arrived in Philadelphia from Germany in 1749 and developed an interest in native languages and customs. He became an official of the Indian Department under Sir William Johnson (Cat. no. 11) attending conferences and negotiations with native representatives. During the American Revolution, he fled to Canada and became responsible for settling loyal Mohawks of the Six Nations confederacy in Ontario at the Bay of Quinte and on the Grand River. He died in Britain where he had gone to seek compensation for his losses sustained during the Revolution.
