Townsite Heritage Society

The Townsite Heritage Society of Powell River was formed in 1989, registered in 1991, and received charitable status in 1992. It's purpose is to "protect, enhance, and promote the historical character and integrity of the traditional neighbourhood and business section of the first woodpulp and paper company in western Canada....by educating our children, adults, and tourists..." The Townsite Heritage Society works in close conjunction with the Municipal Council to fundraise, increase public awareness, and handle administration of the ongoing projects within the Townsite.

The Townsite Heritage Society is comprised of residents and representatives from key organizations within the Powell River area, such as the Chamber of Commerce, the Visitors Bureau, and the Corporation of the District of Powell River. In addition to the regular members, there are approximately 150 volunteers who assist with special projects of the Heritage Society. There is a full time co-ordinator working for the society and an office open to the public, located within the Heritage Townsite.

The Townsite is Powell River's inheritance, and the birthplace of our community. Times have changed, but the Townsite remains entrenched in our heritage.

Many communities have realized the cultural and financial benefits of restoring heritage areas. Powell River can do the same. It takes time, and effort but with foresight and community support it can be done.

By building on the past, we can make sure the legacy will last for generations to come.
