In folk culture, the image of an Indian on horseback who lived in a tepee and hunted
buffalo is automatically associated with the traditional way of life of the Plains
Indians. However, in the historical era, the peoples of the Plains had other means of
subsistence. Several nations of the central and southern Plains were semi-sedentary and
practised agriculture. Among them were the Mandan, the Arikara, the Hidatsa, the Dakota
and the Pawnee, who lived along the Missouri and Mississippi rivers.
