In folk culture, the image of an Indian on horseback who lived in a tepee and hunted buffalo is automatically associated with the traditional way of life of the Plains Indians. However, in the historical era, the peoples of the Plains had other means of subsistence. Several nations of the central and southern Plains were semi-sedentary and practised agriculture. Among them were the Mandan, the Arikara, the Hidatsa, the Dakota and the Pawnee, who lived along the Missouri and Mississippi rivers.
