As Quebec City is one of the oldest cities in North America, it is easy
to imagine all the history that has unfolded there over the centuries. The
city has also retained a European character unique in North America. So it
is not surprising that it is a World Heritage Site.
A city for tourists, rich in history, where succeeding generations of
great men and women worked to build a colony and then a country--we could
not talk about the history of Quebec City without knowing all these
historical characters. And in a sense, that is the purpose of this
collection: to get to know various historical characters important in the
history of Quebec City and Canada by presenting a number of monuments
commemorating Quebec City, the historical characters and events represented,
and the creators and sponsors of the monuments themselves. Of course, there
are so many of these men and women that it is not possible to name them all,
but you will find most of them here. They will take you back in time to
gain a better understanding of our origins and the foundations of our
country.
This site was made possible through the co-operation of the Quebec City
archives department, which provided many of the documents we used to present
information available only in certain contemporary records. We hope you
will experience all the rich history evoked by the existence of these
monuments in the very heart of Quebec City, cradle of French America.
