Carbon Monoxide

Carbon monoxide is a very harmful gas. It gets into your blood and doesn't let oxygen in! That means your body cells aren't getting as much oxygen as they need, and it can make you very sick. Carbon monoxide is especially bad, because you can't smell it, taste it, or see it.

Carbon monoxide comes from gas ovens, stoves, water heaters, and furnaces that are not working as well as they should be. It also comes from wood fireplaces and wood stoves. Whenever something is burned, there is usually carbon monoxide being made. You can keep your house safe by making sure there are enough windows and vents open whenever something is being burned in your house. Cars also make a lot of carbon monoxide, so if you have a garage attached to your house, you have to make sure the door is open whenever the car is running, so that the poison gas can get out!
