Volunteers
 e
are looking for volunteers to assist us with the most important
part of our operation - our visitors! Our
visitors are from all over the world, and most come to St. Ann's
Academy as part of their enjoyment of Victoria's rich history as
the provincial capital.
Our
site has many types of volunteer jobs:
Docents
Greet visitors as they walk through our interpretive
centre. Docent means "volunteer teacher": one who answers
questions, and helps to guide visitors on site through our Chapel,
parlours and gardens. On quieter days, docents are sometimes asked
to help staff with other duties on site.
Wedding
Assistants
St. Ann's beautiful historic chapel currently sees over 100 wedding
rentals a year. From helping staff prepare the site for receptions,
to ringing the bell as the bridal party departs, a wedding volunteer
is someone with lots of energy, who enjoys excitement.
Program
Volunteer
Would you enjoy assisting with school programs, conferences, festivals,
and heritage-oriented events? You can help with the organization
and supervision of such activities, and also with special tours
and public openings.
Everyone
welcome
We welcome volunteers with all kinds of abilities; for example,
we have volunteers that work on cataloguing our collections; one
who is sewing replicate altar linens; and another who helped to
produce this information.
Some typical
St. Ann's volunteers
Susan began
her involvement with St. Ann's serving refreshments at a class reunion
for the graduates of 1950. She is now a regular on Thursday mornings,
and enjoys telling the visitors about the school and the Sisters
of St. Ann, and her days as a student.
Jackson first
became aware of St. Ann's Academy when he was the volunteer set
designer for a children's play in our Auditorium. He is now an on-call
volunteer for the many busy Saturday weddings that take place in
the chapel. He enjoys the people and all the fun of these occasions.
Liz is a part-time
student and full-time mom, but enjoys the weekend opportunity to
greet the public and work with paid staff on clerical duties. She
has made many improvements to our filing system. She hopes her hours
at St. Ann's will aid her in her job search once she has graduated.
Phyllis is
retired and in her early 80's, but still has a lot to give. She
comes in on-call to help with our new school programs for younger
grades. She is getting used to the flow of the program, and trained
for two days with staff to "learn the ropes" of the program
and its activities. She enjoys the children's happy chatter and
many questions.
