First Nations people living on the coast (Coast Salish) traditionally build homes out of red cedar trees.
Traditional tools like a D-adze and elbow adze are used to make the planks to build the house. Houses are traditionally built facing the ocean. The family 'house portal' totem poles built into the front of the house tell everyone of the history of the family.
Coastal First Nations (Coast Salish) traditionally use large canoes to travel by water. It is tradition to carry the large house boards with them by canoe. Activity: Visit a traditional coastal First Nations house and compare how it is the same or different from your house.
