[Perceptive Peepers]

[Theory:]
Have you ever wondered why we have two eyes? Each of our eyes see things from a slightly different place. This gives depth to what we are seeing, so we see things in three dimensions (with height, width, and depth). Here is an activity where you can try to see what the effects of having the use of only one eye can be.

[Materials:]

[Procedure:]
  1. Toss a ball back and forth between you and a partner with one hand.
  2. Now close one eye. Is it easier or harder to catch the ball?

[Conclusions:]
Imagine going through life with only one eye. We would have no depth perception, so it would be like looking at a flat picture constantly! When you tried to catch the tennis ball with only one eye, you had no depth perception and therefore couldn't tell how far away the ball was, making it difficult to catch.
