TOPIC: Graphing beavers

TIME FRAME:  1 class

COMMON ESSENTIAL LEARNINGS:  Communication, Independent Learning, Numeracy, Critical  and Creative Thinking.

MATERIALS:   Thirty five nickels and graph paper.

- summarize beaver information in a variety of ways.
- anticipate and develop questions about the beaver.

Physical: Students will...
- participate in class and small group discussions and collaborative tasks.
- be able to toss coins to receive data.
- participate in decisions around classroom management and appropriate behavior.

- demonstrate increasing awareness that appropriateness of language is determined by situation, purpose and audience.

3. PURPOSE/TEACHER BACKGROUND INFORMATION:

The purpose of this lesson is to have students work cooperatively when collecting data about the beaver.

Students will experience how to graph the beavers information on a chart.
Each student within a group will toss 7 nickels.  Another student will graph how many times a beaver is tossed.  Who ever tosses the most beavers wins the game.

Have students explore on the internet for information on the fur trade.

4.  ACTIVITIES/IDEAS:

Divide students into groups of five.  Each group is given 7 nickels.  Within each group, each student is to toss the nickels.  Another group member will graph the information.
