Turkey Point is located on about three kilometres of sandy beach along the north shore of Lake Erie in the Township of Delhi. John Graves Simcoe named Turkey Point while travelling through the area in 1795 because of the abundance of wild turkeys. It became the capital of the London District. The Courthouse was built and remained there until 1815 when it was moved to Vittoria. In 1959, the Turkey Point Provincial Park was established to help preserve the natural beauty of the area. After years of hunting, the abundance of wild turkey that John Graves Simcoe had once seen began to disappear. Between 1984 and 1987, 276 turkeys were brought from the United States and released in Ontario in an effort to re-populate the birds.
