The PHEASANT arrived on the Skeena in 1905, under Captain Magar's command, and operated that summer without much success since she proved very underpowered for the Skeena.  The locals quickly nicknamed her the "Chicken" as she had to scratch so hard to make it up the rapids.

In 1906, veteran skipper Captain Bonser took over command of the PHEASANT.   In the fall of that year, she received a contract to blast rocks out of two bad spots on the Skeena - Beaver Dam Rapids and the Hornet's Nest.  Unfortunately, she stayed upriver too long and got wrecked on the rocks in Beaver Dam on November 16, 1906.   She was Captain Bonser's first loss to the Skeena River.
