Over the past 150 years, the Snuneymuxw people have been alienated from the land-based village sites promised to them in the Douglas Treaty of 1854. Today more than half of the membership live off- reserve due to limited housing and economic opportunities. The reserve land base is only 263 hectares, one of the smallest per capita in Canada. As a nation Snuneymuxw First Nation is working to improve this situation through treaty negotiations. On the map below, Snuneymuxw reserves today are shown in dark red, City of Nanaimo in light red.
