Over the past 150 years, the Snuneymuxw people have been alienated from the land-based village sites promised to them in the Douglas Treaty of 1854. Today more than half of the membership live off- reserve due to limited housing and economic opportunities. The reserve land base is only 263 hectares, one of the smallest per capita in Canada. As a nation Snuneymuxw First Nation is working to improve this situation through treaty negotiations.
