Since contact with Europens, the main sports played on our reserves were Lacrosse, Soccer, Canoe pulling, and the Bone game. Lacrosse is a well-known sport that has been played by First Nations people for many generations.

The Nanaimo Native Sons was a well-known, winning lacrosse team made up of SFN members in the 1950s. Below, a photo taken from the newspaper shows the team during that era.

Soccer is also another well-known sport that's been played for generations. Shown below is the 1968 Nanaimo team that won Victora's All-Native Soccer Tournament.

Canoe pulling is a racing sport where canoes from different First Nation regions get together and race against one another. It includes categories for eleven-man canoes, six-man canoes, double canoes and single canoes.

Weekends of First Nation canoe pulling have been popular for many decades.
