The petroglyphs created in our area, according to evidence, seem to be exclusively native in origin. This motif is supremely shamanistic, in character and meaning. Anyone seeing the petroglyphs of the Northwest Coast will notice that the anthropomorphic figures are in a frontally oriented pose with bent arms and legs, this is not unlike the dance position that ancestors practiced. Rattles on the petroglyphs further suggest shamanism. Petroglyphs depicted with ribs may symbolise the skeleton of the dead. In West Coast cultures, the dead served as guardian spirits and gave powers of prophecy and clairvoyance, which is associated with the shaman.

Petroglyphs
Left: is a petroglyph rediscovered within Snuneymuxw Traditional Territory. The anthropomorphic pose combined with head plumes suggests a figure of power.

Above: while similar to that on the left this one tells a different story. Ribs represent the dead or the supernatural. Also note the inverted man inside the beast.
