Alberta: History of Irrigation Districts
United Irrigation District (U.I.D.)

The United Irrigation District was formed in 1921 under the Irrigation Districts Act. This district includes all lands between the Belly and Waterton Rivers situated north of Township 3, Range 27, West of the Fourth Meridian, and contains approximately 25,500 hectares of which 13,800 can be irrigated.

The water for this district is diverted from the Belly River. Construction of the irrigation works was undertaken in 1922 and completed in 1924, with the provincial government guaranteeing the repayment of a $550,000 debenture issue. The completed irrigation works cost about $37 per irrigable hectare. Unfortunately, the farmers of the district were not able to finance the annual fixed charges levied and in 1941 the provincial government assumed all responsibility for the debentures. The farmers were only required to pay an average of $17.25 per hectare for the water rights.

The area actually irrigated in this district each year varies considerably, depending on local rainfall.
