The extracurricular activities were equally important at Collège Sainte-Anne. The Fathers at the time thought the students should be socially as well as intellectually educated. Included among the extracurricular activities were religious fraternities, literary circles, theatre, band, student newspaper, and sports.
Religious Fraternities
The religious fraternities became active at the very beginning of the univesity's life. By 1893, the Fête de la congrégation de la T.S Vierge and the Pèlerinage de la congrégation de la Sainte Vierge à Corberrie had been founded. Ten years later, the Sacred Heart Fraternity was established and monthly meetings took place on Sunday nights. These fraternities continued until the 1950s.
The Literary Circles
The literary circles were held with meetings in both French and English
during the period when the institution was a college. However, things
changed once it gained university status. The first indications that a
literary group existed date back to May 8,1893. This first group was named
the Saint Joseph Academy and it was under the direction of Father Haquin
until 1894 when Father Ozanne took charge. Unfortunately, the fire
of 1899 ended the literary group's activities until it was reorganized
in 1905 to continue until 1960. In addition to the Saint Joseph Academy,
there was the Saint Thomas group, the Société du
Bon Parler Français (1923), l’Avant Garde(1927) and the
Cercle Garcia-Moreno (1914-1916). The English literary circles
were called the Saint Patrick’s Society and the Dramatic Society and enjoyed
a fair amount of success until these groups disappeared in 1971.
