Bishop Patrice-Alexandre Chiasson (1908-1917)
Patrice-Alexandre Chiasson was born on November 26th, 1867, in Grand-Étang,
Cape Breton, Nova Scotia (Canada). He studied at the Normal
School in Fredericton, New Brunswick, where he taught for a few years.
In 1891, he arrived at Collège Sainte-Anne to teach courses and
to follow the classical program. He spent three years at Sainte-Anne during
which time he decided to join the Eudist Congregation. In September 1894,
he entered the noviciate in Brittany to study theology and was ordained
into the priesthood in 1898. Chiasson replaced Dagnaud as the Superior
of Collège Sainte-Anne in 1908 and remained there until 1917. After
Father Blanche’s death that same year, Chiasson was named Apostolic Vicariate
of the Gulf of St.Lawrence, making him the second Acadian to be consecrated
bishop. He died in 1942.
