(Click on the appropriate square for an enlargement) The St. Lawrence is a fundamental element in the dynamism of the Canadian economy. The St. Lawrence and the Great Lakes represent a 3,700 kilometers long hydrographic system linking the Great Lakes, the industrial heartland of North America, to the Atlantic Ocean. It is composed of two main divisions; the fluvial section and the estuary. Source: Scott, S., et al. (1989). The St. Lawrence River: Its Economy and Environment.
