End of Lachine Rapids, looking east, Montreal
With Montreal (and Mount Royal) on the background we can see the strong current at the end of the Lachine Rapids. Since Jacques Cartier explored the region, these rapids have prevented ocean-going ships to go beyond Montreal. In the nineteen century the Lachine Canal was built to overcome this obstacle and in 1959, it was replaced by the St. Lawrence Seaway. Photo: Jean-Paul Rodrigue, July 1997.
