Association for Indigenous Radio

The Association for Indigenous Radio consists of Aboriginal Community Radio Stations throughout Southern Ontario in various stages of development. Their mission is to build a strong sense of community spirit and Aboriginal Nationhood through a community radio association.

The Association for Indigenous Radio consists of Aboriginal community radio stations throughout Southern Ontario. At a March 1995 conference, the consensus of all participating Aboriginal radio station representatives, was to form a network. The result is the Assocation for Indigenous Radio.

The Association was created:

  1. To further the aims and objectives of the Member Radio Stations through:

    • Helping to establish new and emerging Aboriginal community radio stations
    • Preserving, enriching, and perpetuating the languages of Indigenous Peoples
    • Providing assistance to any radio stations in matters directly related to the radio stations when requested to do so by the radio stations, especially in the areas of: cultural awareness, CRTC Applications & Guidelines, technical briefs to Industry Canada (Department of Communications), information, programming, community development, funding services and management
    • Negotiation with government, civic and religious organizations regarding matters of concern to Member Radio Stations collectively;
    • To lobby for funding and for policies and regulations which advance the development of Aboriginal community radio stations with organizations on its own behalf
    • Establishment of training initiatives and development opportunities and resources for staff, board members and volunteers
    • To act as the representative of the Member Radio Stations on any committees, boards or working groups of the Member Radio Stations or the Association's Board of Directors of any national associations of Radio Stations

    • To provide direct services and programming capability through the establishment of mechanisms which increase resource and information sharing capabilities (i.e. syndication)

    • To encourage the development of broadcast standards and policies.

Andrew Best, manager of Keyah, hopes his company will be able to make use of the Procurement Strategy for Aboriginal Business to "facilitate communication between the Canadian federal government and First Nations people in the North." In the North, complex issues such as land claims agreements, resource management, and economic development, call for clarity, mutual understanding and co-operation between the various stakeholders. When the federal government wants to deliver a message or consult with northern communities, there are social, cultural and linguistic sensitivities to consider. The people at Keyah feel that they can use their knowledge and experience to help the government communicate in the appropriate language, through the most convenient medium.
