Montreal
(Two Famous St. Lawrence Bridges)
The
original Victoria Tubular Bridge, designed by Robert
Stephenson, and opened by the Prince of Wales in 1860,
was replaced in 1898-99 by the Victoria-Jubilee Bridge,
a pin-connected truss structure, with twenty-five spans.
It cost $20,000,000 and is operated by the Grand Trunk
Railway. The Lachine Bridge of the Canadian Pacific
Railway is a light and graceful piece of work built
on the cantilever principle. Each channel spans 408
feet long.
