Placentia
(from Mount Pleasant)
Settled
and fortified by the French in 1660. Placentia is most
beautifully situated at the head of a spacious and magnificent
harbor, in which over one hundred and fifty vessels
can lie in safety, the entrance being only wide enough
to admit one at a time. In the Anglican church-yard
there is still to be seen some tomb stones with Basque
inscriptions. Noted for being the birthplace of "Richard
Brothers" the celebrated prophet who flourished
in London, Eng., in the seventeenth century.
