The photographs chosen for this digitization project were displayed in a 1989 exhibition hosted by the National Archives of Canada and represent only a portion of the Taconis collection. They document the "Hunger Winter" of 1944-45 in Amsterdam, the Dam Square shooting of May 7, 1945, and the liberation of Amsterdam on May 8th, 1945. As a member of the Ondergedoken Camera Group (Underground Photographers Group) which was created in 1943 within the Dutch Resistance, Kryn Taconis' task was to secretly document the German Occupation of the Netherlands in order to have a record of the events. He created a series of images that conveyed the harsh reality of war with a mixture of sympathy and sensitivity. Taconis was less interested in the behaviour of the Nazis or in the exploits of the Resistance fighters and chose to focus on the physical and psychological effects of destitution, hunger and the endless search for food and shelter.

Les photographies choisies pour ce projet de numérisation ont fait partie d'une exposition présentée aux Archives nationales du Canada en 1989 et ne représentent qu'une partie de la collection Taconis. Elles documentent l'hiver de la faim de 1944-1945 à Amsterdam, la fusillade de Dam Square, le 7 mai 1945, et la libération d'Amsterdam, le 8 mai 1945. Membre de l'Ondergedoken Camera Group (le groupe de photographes clandestins) créé en 1943 dans le cadre de la Résistance néerlandaise, Kryn Taconis avait la tâche de documenter secrètement l'occupation allemande aux Pays-Bas afin d'enregistrer les événements. Il a ainsi produit une série d'images qui dénoncent la dure réalité de la guerre et inspirent sympathie et sensibilité. Taconis ne s'intéressait guère au comportement des Nazis ni aux exploits des Résistants, mais plutôt aux effets physiques et psychologiques de l'indigence, de la faim et de l'éternelle quête de nourriture et d'abri.
