The newspaper L'Impartial was first printed on June 22, 1893, and it
lasted for 22 years until July 11, 1915.
The founders of this publication were Gilbert Buote and his son, François-Joseph Buote.
In L'Impartial, between the years of 1904 and 1906, was published the first
Acadian novel: Placide, l'homme mystérieux.
L'Impartial Illustré, a single magazine published as a commemorative parish/community history paper, was published on the printing press of the newspaper L'Impartial in part
English/part French. It was published on the occasion of the Tignish Centennial on July
19, 1899. This publication consisted of three parts, that being the history of Tignish, notables from
Tignish at the local, provincial and national levels and the genealogies of the Acadian founding
families of Tignish. Also included is a detailed section on the first Irish settlers of Tignish
compiled mainly from their descendants. This publication rates as the first community history
of any substance ever published on the Island, and its quality was such that few publications of
that nature in the first three-quarters of the 20th century could equal it. None surpassed it.
