According to tradition the name "Tignish" is a corruption of the Mi'kmaq Mtagunick or
Mtagunachlk, supposedly meaning "paddle" or "broken paddle". Mi'kmaq sources, however,
do not support this theory. Some Irish scholars believe that "tig" means "small" in
the Irish language and that "nish" means "house"; therefore, the word Tignish could mean "small house".
Today, Tignish, located in western Prince County, P.E.I., is a beautiful village with a style
of its own and plenty of interesting sights to visit in the vicinity. A few of these sights include the
Atlantic Wind Test Site at North Cape, Skinners Pond Schoolhouse (the oldest original
schoolhouse on the Island), and the magnificent St. Simon and St. Jude Church (the largest
Neo-Gothic church on the Island).
