The newspaper L'Impartial Illustré, an offshoot of Prince Edward Island's first-ever French-language newspaper, first appeared in Tignish in 1893. L'Impartial Illustré, ranking as the fourth Acadian newspaper in the Maritimes, lasted for 22 years until July 11, 1915. Its founders were the Buotes, Gilbert and François-Joseph. The following tells the story of this remarkable family.

Gilbert Buote (L'Impartial) Gilbert Buote

Gilbert Buote- lived between the years 1833 and 1904. Although he was a renowned educator, he is perhaps better known for founding the first French-Acadian newspaper on the Island, L'Impartial. His claim to fame is due largely to his novel, Placide, l'homme mystérieux, published in 30 installments in L'Impartial, from 1904-1906.

François-Joseph Buote

François-Joseph Buote François-Joseph Buote- lived between the years 1861-1922. Following in his father's footsteps, he became a teacher as well as a publisher of L'Impartial alongside his father. In 1908, he was chosen as president of the Société Nationale de l'Assomption by the National Acadian Convention in Saint-Basile. François-Joseph Buote was also largely responsible for Mackenzie King's election for the Prince County seat that had fallen vacant with the death of Joseph Read.
