Stories of Immigrants

East Indians

From about 1900 on, Sikh immigrants from the Punjab in India began to arrive in British Columbia, mostly men looking for work to support their families back home. Their religion requires the men to wear turbans, beards, and swords, which makes them very distinctive looking.

Many of them worked in the lumber woods, at sawmills and canneries, and building railways. Eventually they began to bring their families to settle with them in their new home. The variety of work done by East Indian men, and the contributions they made to British Columbia, are shown in these photographs.
