The Muskrat

Muskrat The muskrat was also hunted during Tod's time. Muskrat pelts are usually a glossy dark brown. Since muskrats are largely aquatic animals, their fur is waterproof.

The muskrat shares many behaviours with the Beaver, but muskrats do not build dams. Also, they use reeds instead of trees for construction and food. They are very strong swimmers and can stay underwater for over fifteen minutes. The muskrat is also a determined fighter. Instead of freezing when cornered it will turn and attack its attacker (Rue, 1981).
