Kalugwis
"We found another village--Karlukwees--more interesting than the others. The clean white beach had borrowed its shape from the new moon. Here the chief's house--a very civilized little house, such as you see in any Canadian town--was flanked by two incongruous forbidding figures, each carrying a keg upon his shoulder. What exactly was their significance I could not imagine."
Phillips Wet Paint, n.d.:106
"After I built my whiteman style house, I put the old poles from my father's gukwdzi (Big House) alongside. I had to dig new holes and move the poles around so they faced the beach. Just for fun I put oak barrels on their shoulders where the house beams used to rest."
"Do you remember a white man at the village who was drawing the poles when you erected them?"
"No, I don't"
Chief Peter S. Smith, Lawit'sis tribe. Macnair, personal communication, Kalugwis 1970
In the interest of composition, Phillips has placed Sam Charlie's pole from 'Mi'mkwamlis village in the background of this scene of the re-erection of Peter Smith's father's pole at Kalugwis village. See Phillips' print Mamalillicoola, B.C.
