FUGITIVE SLAVE ACT OF 1850 - SECTION #10
And be it further executed, That the provisions
of an act entitled "An act respecting fugitives from justice, and persons
escaping from the service of their masters," approved February twelve,
seventeen hundred and ninety-three, and the provisions of the act entitled
"An act to amend, and supplementary to the aforesaid act," approved September
eighteen, eighteen hundred and fifty, be, and the same are hereby, declared
to extend to and be in full force within the limits of said Territory
of Nebraska.
The act stated further that federal representatives would replace state magistrates in the enforcement of the Fugitive Slave Laws. By appointing federal representatives, Congress assured that sympathetic state magistrates could not ignore the Acts enacted by Congress. Furthermore, judges in these cases received $10 for returning the accused to slavery and only $5 for acquittals.
