Niagara's Freedom Trail

The Underground Railroad was an organized system of escape designed to free the oppressed slaves of America. It was the result of refugee slaves and dedicated abolitionists coming together with one common goal: to bring about the end of slavery. The majority of passengers who traveled along the Underground Railroad headed North towards Canada because the country had taken drastic steps towards abolishing the institution of slavery within its borders. The region of Niagara was a safe-haven for refugee slaves crossing the Niagara River into freedom. The heart of the region was also a sanctuary for abolitionist activities centered around the city of St. Catharines. The focus of this website is to bring to life the History of the Underground Railroad in the city of St. Catharines and the Niagara Region.
