6. What is a Red Giant? As a star evolves out of the main sequence its outer shells of hydrogen begins to expand and cool, glowing a dull red colour. Red giants are truly large and can approach sizes on the order of 1000 times as large as the sun. This would mean that if a large red giant was placed in our sun's position it would take up space out to the orbit of Mars. |
