United Mission
Lingan Road
The United Mission is an imposing three-story wood frame structure with a gabled roof. Today it provides space for a daycare and community centre, and its activities are supervised by members of the Black community of Whitney Pier. It began as part of the Social Gospel.
From 1912 to 1918, it was called the Italian Mission (Protestant) before it came under the joint sponsorship of the Presbyterian and Methodist Missionary Societies. In 1925, the Italian Mission was included in the formation of the United Church of Canada, from which time it became known as the United Mission. Serving many immigrants who resided near the steel plant, the Mission performed various functions-church services, marriage ceremonies and baptisms-and played a vital role in several ethnic communities. On a social level, the Mission provided health clinics and social welfare during the difficult years of the Depression and during times when the steel plant workers were striking. The Mission also provided language training to new immigrants in the area.
Its work was administered by the Women's Missionary Society of the Presbyterian and Methodist Churches and later by the United Church of Canada. Since 1937, the United Mission has been the responsibility of Trinity United Church.
