Victoria Methodist Church
Victoria Road and Wesley Street

The Victoria Methodist Church, one of the major components of the United Church in Whitney Pier, is no longer active. Nor is the building standing, having been demolished soon after the Methodist congregation joined Trinity Church in 1937.

Victoria Methodist began as a Mission of the Sydney Jubilee Methodist Church in 1901 when a large wood frame structure was erected on Victoria road-the site of the current Whitney Pier Royal Canadian Legion. In 1925, the Mission became Victoria United Church, although it continued to be known as Victoria Methodist Church. The building had a high gable roof with a centrally placed copula. The high and wide pitch of the roof, combined with two levels of windows and contrasting upper and lower sheathing, was reminiscent of early New England styles.

The congregation included many Newfoundlanders and West Indians, and other Anglo-Celtic immigrants and migrants from various parts of Nova Scotia, including Nova Scotia Blacks.
