A Portrait of N, by its long narrative nature, and the contrast of light and dark contained within it, requires us to think about the person represented. This photo based work exists as one image, but as such is not clear and akin to seeing in the shadows with neither depth nor detail fully revealed. Like the slaves in Plato's Allegory of the Cave, seeing the shadows and accepting them as truth, we see the surface and embrace these observations as representative of the whole.

One must observe this work closely, for it has many fragments, with numerous, repeated layers, much like the building blocks of personal experience, each representative of both the virtue and the vice of a life. The fugitive image of N courses through the image with various densities, sometimes semi-solid, occasionally as a silhouette and frequently, almost transparent. We think we see the essence of the individual but as we move through the chronicle and observe each different figurative image, we notice a disparate personality that seems to contradict the perception we had established a priori, leading us to the conclusion we may never know much more than the shadows of a person's life.
