Fires plagued Wawanesa in the early days just as they did all prairie towns. Buildings were generally close together and a single fire had the potential to destroy many whole blocks. The fire of 1934 destroyed Bridgeman Block, Sweeney's Garage, Beveridge & Lea's Blacksmith Shop, The Cafe, Donald's Bakery, Bolton's Barbershop, and ironically the Liberty Fire Extinguisher Company.
