Income for Living? is the first report in which the Council looked at the new Market Basket Measure (MBM) poverty line. It compares four different income types: welfare, minimum wage, low wage, and average wage. The research showed that some Canadians working full-time lived in poverty and could not afford average housing and child care costs.
We look at four types of low-income families in the largest city in each of Quebec, Ontario, Alberta and British Columbia and look at what their incomes would be if they were on welfare and if they had paid work. In doing our calculations, we looked at the effects on take-home pay of taxes and income support programs in each of the four provinces.
