INTERGOVERNMENTAL AFFAIRS ON THE INTERNET

April 19, 1996 – The President of the Queen's Privy Council for Canada and Minister of Intergovernmental Affairs, the Honourable Stéphane Dion, announced today that Intergovernmental Affairs now has its own home page on the Internet. The site now features basic elements providing general information. When the site is completed in May, a host of information and components will be available to users.

The Intergovernmental Affairs site address is http://www.aia.gc.ca. The site contains speeches by Mr. Dion, press releases and a section for comments by users.

Like other departments, Intergovernmental Affairs has decided to use the Internet to provide all Canadians with a direct mechanism for obtaining information and communicating with the Government about our country. Internet complements traditional means of communication, facilitating dialogue and rapid information.

"I am confident in Canada's future. Many Canadians have already written to me to express their concerns and share their ideas about how to renew the Canadian federation. The Internet site will provide us with further observations and comments in that regard."

The Minister believes that by working together and talking about the issues that concern all Canadians, we will meet the challenges facing Canada as we move into the 21st century. "It is that spirit of solidarity that will allow us to make Canada stronger and more solid. I have accepted the Prime Minister's invitation to combat negativism, to work to improve the functioning of the Canadian federation and to ensure that future generations can benefit from a better Canada. I am counting on Canadians' support and participation," said Mr.Dion.
