STATEMENT BY THE PRIME MINISTER

The following is the text of a statement by Prime Minister
Jean Chrétien on the occasion of International Women’s Day 2001:
International Women’s Day, March 8th, is a
time for all of us to take pride in women’s accomplishments and to
rededicate ourselves to the cause of equality.
The first International Women’s Day, in 1911, arose from
the determination of women to secure the most fundamental of our democratic
rights: the right to vote. Ninety years of struggle and achievement later,
women not only have the vote, but they also play pivotal leadership roles,
the world over, in all areas of social, economic and political endeavour.
Even so, obstacles to women’s full equality remain. And International
Women’s Day reminds us that we must speak out and act for change, locally,
nationally and globally.
In recognition of this, for International Women’s Day
2001, our government has chosen the theme "Canadian Women: Raising Our
Diverse Voices for Positive Change!"
As Prime Minister, I call on all Canadians to take
advantage of the many celebrations and festivities connected with
International Women’s Day 2001 to re-energize their commitment to this
cause. And may the countless contributions that women have made to our
history, to our quality of life and to our future continue to inspire us to
build a better world for all.
