Nick Taylor Appointed to the Senate

Prime Minister Jean Chrétien announced today that His Excellency the Governor General has agreed to summon Nick Taylor of Alberta to the Senate of Canada.

The appointment is effective immediately.

Nick Taylor

Nick Taylor was born in Bow Island, Alberta on November 17, 1927. He is one of Alberta's best known public figures with an outstanding record of achievement in both public life and business.

Mr. Taylor has a B. Sc. in geology and engineering from the University of Alberta. Before entering public life he was a leading figure in Alberta's business community, in oil, gas, real estate, shipping, and finance. He served as Leader of the Alberta Liberal Party from 1974 to 1988. He was first elected to the Alberta Legislature in 1986. In 1985 he received the Alberta Association of Professional Engineers "Citizen of the Year" Award in recognition of his outstanding contribution to community affairs.

Mr. Taylor and his wife live on a farm in the Bon Accord -- Gibbons area of Alberta. They have nine children and twelve grandchildren.
