Canada condemns terrorism bombing in Atlanta

July 27, 1996
Ottawa, Ontario

Prime Minister Jean Chrétien condemned the terrorist bombing that occurred early this morning at the Centennial Park in Atlanta.

In letters to President Bill Clinton and to the President of the International Olympic Committee, Juan Antonio Samaranch, the Prime Minister stated that Canadians were shocked and dismayed at the news that a bomb had exploded early this morning at the Centennial Park in Atlanta.

On behalf of all Canadians, the Prime Minister offered his condolences to the families of the victims and his sympathy and best wishes for a speedy recovery to the many who were wounded.

The Prime Minister added that this bombing was a wanton attack on the spirit of the Olympic Games and underlined his conviction that the athletes, organizers and members of the International Olympic Committee (IOC) should not allow this tragic event to deter them. The Prime Minister also welcomed the decision of the IOC to procede with the Games and said he believes the olympic flame must continue to burn.
