Prime Minister expresses distress following hostage taking in Peru

December 18, 1996
Ottawa, Ontario

Prime Minister Jean Chrétien tonight expressed his deep distress at the news of the occupation of the Japanese Ambassador's residence in Lima, Peru, and of the taking of a large number of hostages, including the Ambassador for Canada, Mr. Anthony Vincent, among other Canadians.

"Canada condemns all acts of international terrorism. There is no justification for such wanton acts of violence. We will continue to act in close concert with countries that fight against the scourge of terrorism," he stated.

The Prime Minister conveyed his concerns for the hostages and stated that the hopes and prayers of Canadians are with them and their families. He welcomed the early release of some hostages, including Canadian spouses.

Canada will cooperate closely with the Peruvian authorities in their efforts to bring this crisis to a resolution, with the safe release of hostages.
