Prime Minister Jean Chrétien issued the following statement on the occasion
of National Volunteer Week 2000 (April 9-15):
"National Volunteer Week is an opportunity for all Canadians to pay
tribute to the millions of volunteers who everyday make our communities
better places to live. By getting actively involved, volunteers are helping
to keep our communities strong and ensure the quality of life we enjoy as
Canadians.
I am pleased to honour the men, women and young people who contribute to
their communities, thereby enriching Canada, in this very personal way.
This year’s theme, "Volunteering - a time-honoured
tradition", celebrates the significant role volunteers have played in
shaping our past, and recognizes the need for their continued support to
help guide our future. And I look forward to 2001, when volunteers will be
recognized throughout the year during the United Nations International Year
of Volunteers."
