Sponsorship Program terminated and Communication Canada disbanded

December 13, 2003
Ottawa, Ontario

NEWS RELEASE

The Government of Canada today announced that effective immediately the Sponsorship Program will be eliminated and Communication Canada will be disbanded by the end of the fiscal year.

The elimination of the Sponsorship Program will provide $40 million in savings per year. Commitments already made to organizations and communities will be respected but no new activities will be undertaken. The department of Canadian Heritage will contact affected community-based organizations and will continue support to meritorious projects from within its current budget.

The existing Communication Canada organization will be disbanded. Its services, such as the main government web site, canada.gc.ca, and the toll-free telephone information service (1-800 O-Canada), along with its other key communication functions, will be reviewed quickly with a view to eliminating some activities, while enhancing service to Canadians and finding significant savings.

Central agencies will work with managers and employees of Communication Canada, and other affected departments, to ensure the review proceeds quickly, with no disruption in services to Canadians.
