Prime Minister announces new Deputy Whip in the House of Commons

NEWS RELEASE

Prime Minister Paul Martin today announced the appointment of Diane St. Jacques as Deputy Government Whip in the House of Commons.

Biography

Diane St-Jacques is a persevering and determined woman. Her actions have always been guided by a desire to help people and her devotion to the community. For over 25 years, Ms St-Jacques has volunteered in the community, in sporting life, in cultural activities and in the world of business. She first became involved in politics in 1979. She took part in a number of election campaigns before being asked to stand as a candidate in the 1997 elections. She was elected to represent Shefford at that time.

In September 2000, she joined the Liberal group. That same year, the public supported her once again in the elections.

Ms St-Jacques is continually testing the limits. This is source of her passion for politics. Her motto is to get things moving. She experiences no greater pleasure than in encouraging people. She also believes in young people and regularly recognizes the achievement of young people in her riding.

Her work experience and her 25-year involvement in the community have made her devoted and attentive to the public. Before her election by the people of the riding of Shefford, Ms St-Jacques had a very full career. In 1989, on her election, she was the advertising advisor for a radio station in Sherbrooke. For eight years, she worked for Agropur in Granby, where she served as co-ordinator of promotional activities, among other things. Her career path enabled her to become known to the people of Granby. She served as the chair of the board of directors of the Festival International de la chanson de Granby from 1992 à 1997. She also served on the executive for four years. In addition, Ms St-Jacques served on the board of directors of the Chambre of Commerce of Granby-Bromont, Tourisme Granby and the Festival gastronomique de Granby. She also worked on a number of organizations, including the Fondation du Centre Hospitalier de Granby, the Club Optimiste, S.O.S. Dépannage, the ad hoc committee for the Fondation du Zoo de Granby and the jeux du Québec (winter 1995). Her community involvement testifies to Ms St-Jacques' exceptional devotion and sensitivity to the people of the riding of Shefford.

Diane is the mother of a young daughter, named Sarah Maude.
