Prime Minister asks Auditor General to review Q37

February 04, 2004
Ottawa, Ontario

NEWS RELEASE

Prime Minister Paul Martin today announced that he has asked the Auditor General to review issues related to the handling of Order Paper Question 37 and that she has agreed to conduct a full examination.

Specifically, the Prime Minster has asked the Auditor General to consider the following questions:

  • Is the answer provided to Order Paper Q37 on January 28, 2004 a satisfactory response based on the information the government possesses?
  • Are the reforms to the handling of order paper questions as proposed by the House Leader sufficient to ensure adequate information is provided to parliamentarians?
  • If not, what other steps should be undertaken, including but not limited to reforms to the government’s information systems?

The Prime Minister has asked the Auditor General to provide her findings as soon as possible and, if possible to provide Parliament with an interim report.

In addition, the Prime Minister further committed that all contracts between his former company Canada Steamship Lines and its subsidiaries and the Government of Canada will be routinely posted for public review on the Contracts Canada website.
