Prime Minister announces First Ministers’ Meeting on Equalization and Territorial Formula Financing

Prime Minister Paul Martin announced today a First Ministers’ meeting will be held October 26, 2004 to discuss Equalization, Territorial Formula Financing (TFF) and provide an opportunity for a discussion of other financial pressures facing provinces and territories.
Over the course of the First Ministers’ discussions this week on health care, the Government of Canada outlined proposals to make fundamental changes to the functioning of Equalization and TFF.
The Government of Canada believes its proposals provide a strong basis to proceed with a new framework for Equalization and TFF. There was very positive support for the proposals, however a number of complex implementation issues remain to be discussed.
“We will work at these issues between now and our next meeting and I look forward to further discussions with First Ministers,” the Prime Minister said.
